Hurried Calm
I come back to this spot in Boulder, Colorado more than almost anywhere else. It’s close to home, it’s always changing, and it’s one of the few places where wildlife and weather can surprise you on a random weekday morning.
The night before I made this photo, I had a feeling there might be fog lifting off the water at sunrise. I still managed to oversleep — and then sprinted the last mile down the trail with my camera gear just to make it in time. When I arrived, everything was already happening: the smell of wet grass and reeds, the hush over the pond, and black birds waking up and cutting through the mist. I photographed it in black and white because the mood was the whole point — calm water, heavy sky, and that thin layer of fog that makes the world feel quieter than it really is.
